Convenient City Airports

When flying long distances, the last thing you want when touching down is a long wait to get your luggage and an even longer transfer to your hotel or accommodation.  Some airports that share their name with their city namesakes are unfortunately located so travel takes time and it feels like an eternity before you can kick off your shoes and get settled at your final destination. 

Frankfurt Hahn is nearly 70 miles from central Hamburg, Paris Vatry is an unbelievable 90 miles from Paris with transfers upwards of two hours.  Thankfully not all airports are like this and many are close to the city with excellent travel links making travel to an from the airport a breeze.

Here are 5 airports with brilliant access to their city namesakes.

San Diego International Airport

San Diego International Airport (SAN) handles over 20 million travellers each year with visitors coming for business or to enjoy the beaches, parks, museums and the world-renowned San Diego Zoo.  San Diego airport is under 4 miles from downtown San Diego making transfers quick and easy.   There are lots of options for getting into the city with many hotels offering courtesy shuttles, taxis, car rentals, Amtrak, trolley service and bus services.

Wellington International Airport

Wellington International Airport is in the suburb of Rongotai in Wellington and under 5 miles from the city centre.  Surprisingly it is the 3rd busiest airport in New Zealand behind Auckland which is by far the busiest and Christchurch.  The harbour, beaches and promenade are popular spots for tourists to this small but vibrant city. The airport flyer bus is a cheap and popular choice for transport to and from the airport.

Salt Lake City International Airport

Salt Lake City is under 8 miles from the airport and travel to and from the city is stress free with plenty of options when planning your trip.  Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) is currently being redeveloped to accommodate the growing number of passengers flowing through the airport (over 24 million per year).  This redevelopment is being rolled out in 2020 which will make passage through the airport and travel to Salt Lake City easier.

Las Vegas McCarran

If, like most people, you are staying on The Strip when heading to Las Vegas you will find the trip to your hotel an absolute breeze as the airport is only 3 miles away.  Downtown Las Vegas is about 5 miles away.  Serving around 50 million passengers a year, McCarren International Airport (LAS) is easy to get to and from.  Traffic around The Strip can be busy at times, but the short distance makes transfer times short.

Boston Logan International Airport

Just 3 miles from central Boston, Logan is one of the most convenient city airports in the world.  Located in East Boston there are plenty of options when getting to and from the airport including taxis, shuttles, hotel services and more.  The MBTA (Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority) offers Blue Line Subway services and Silver Line Bus Rapid Transit service to and from Downtown Boston. The MBTA is the most economical and environmentally friendly way to get to Logan.  Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) handles nearly 40 million passengers a year.
